Making music licensing fair by non-profit means
Exposing the work of musical artists to visual artists
  • Streaming audio via Flash and AJAX
  • Unique AJAX eCommerce facilitates entire process from homepage
  • Automated Music Consultant using weighted average SQL search queries
  • Dynamic PDF legal contracts

In 2006, I founded the non profit arts organization Waxfruit Arts Media, Inc. with my brother, Jeff.  Our first major initiative was the FlickTracks Music Library, an online tool to make licensing music to film, television, and other visual media an easy and fair process.  FlickTracks helps visual artists find music that suits their projects and then simplifies the legally laborious process of licensing that music.  Pricing is variable based on use and other factors, and legal contracts and cue sheets are generated dynamically.

The site uses AJAX extensively to make all of the 'shopping cart/eCommerce' pages available from one page - the home page.  The drastically simplies the end-user experience and makes useabililty a non-issue.  For something as complex as 8 variable determinations of price and as sophisticated as dynamically generated legal documents, the FlickTracks system makes is all look easy.

Another aspect of the site is the Music Consultant. The end-user visual artist is led through an interview asking them non-music oriented questions about their project from different perspective.  The content of the work itself, their personal artistic style, and the demographi they are most trying to reach.  I developed a complex text searching algorithm for MySQL that uses weighted averages of matching results from querying the database.  The results are astonishing.
