An elegy for George (and Lou) Harrison. It was previously released on Stereorrific Recordings as a part of Hotel Harrison, a post humus George Harrison tribute. The release featured the poem Light Sleeper by Garrett Caples set to music by my brother, Jeff.
“and when the boat I never said that I was on, passing singing, you will know - my Sweet Defenestration”.
The architecture of the program behind Somnialis was inspired by the work of Morton Feldman, particularly Crippled Symmetry. I wanted to create a working set of tools that would allow me to create loosely knit ‘clouds’ of directable music not set to any tempo or time signature. The director of the piece can manipulate a Gaussian distribution that provides the start time delay for each performer, allowing for more realistic sounding synchronization. Each instrument has a corresponding control panel that tells the sequence how to progress and in what register. Options for playing forward or backward or starting on a different note in the sequence allow for overall direction. The director can also control percentages that are used when making stochastic decisions of pitch class changes.
Although this recordings was completed prior to our collaboration, it stands as the framework for my first collaboration with Holly and Sarah on their Strap In[On] performance.
Thanks to Holly Faurot, Sarah Paulson, Nick Didkovsky, Garrett Caples, and Jeff Mellin
